The Dementia Unit of the University Hospital Virgen de La Arrixaca, directed by Dr. Carmen Antunez, began operations in 2002 and is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of ten professional Murciano Health Service (SMS) experts in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia, who in their daily work combined clinical and research tasks.

Each year, professionals in the Dementia Unit typically serve about 2,500 patients, of which about 500 are newly diagnosed Alzheimer's.

The clinical task is enhanced by the development in 2009 of a telephone support program in which each year receives about 14,000 inquiries from patients and families on various topics related to Alzheimer's.

Another initiative launched in 2009 by the Dementia Unit, in collaboration with Centre for Documentation and Advanced Studies in Contemporary Art Murcia is the project 'Art and culture as therapy', aimed to increase autonomy and cognitive stimulation through art.

Research and donation

The region was the first autonomous region of southern Spain in launching a Brain Bank that currently serves the entire southeastern Spanish.
