In the Region of Murcia are about 12,000 Alzheimer generating 5,000 annual visits to the Dementia Unit
The Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and Dementia (AFADE) Sewer has launched its new day center with 32 beds for Alzheimer's patients, in which the association has invested over 750,000 euros.
The Minister for Health and Social Policy, María Ángeles Palacios, today inaugurated the center, located on Carmen Street Sewer, and in which the Community has a total of 20 squares, under the contract, amounting to 360,000 euros signed between the Instituto Murciano AFADE and Social Action and will run until May 2014.
The association, after two previous locations, now has a modern, spacious and capable of dealing with all guarantees to users thereof participants during their stay at the day center in physical therapy and cognitive stimulation, among other therapies appropriate to their dementia.
The Minister stressed the quality of facilities, both the distribution of services and its decoration, "which makes them a pleasant and stimulating for the user" and reminded that they are people with Alzheimer 'disease who are suffering incurable neurodegenerative disease, which we have proportional pleasant and comfortable spaces. "
Palacios AFADE praised the initiative and the ongoing work since 1999 for Alzheimer's patients, "with which this Government has made a commitment that grows day by day."
More than 400 places of Alzheimer
María Ángeles Palacios said that of the 933 seats of the regional network of day centers, 420 are occupied by people suffering from this disease, and in the homes of the region, where there are 2,240 public squares, 672 are occupied by seniors with Alzheimer or other dementias.
He also referred to health resources for these patients, as the Dementia Unit "in which tasks are combined assists and research for the last 10 years."
In this unit work a dozen experts in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia.
This unit has a telephone support program and further developing the project "Arts and Culture as Therapy", in collaboration with the Centre for Documentation and Advanced Studies of Contemporary Arts Murcia.
12,000 Alzheimer patients
According to figures provided by the Minister, in the Region of Murcia are about 12,000 Alzheimer patients, which generate about 5,000 annual visits to the dementia unit, where each year are attended about 700 new patients.
Palacios said that the Region of Murcia was the first community in southern peninsular launch the Brain Bank, five years ago, and that it has so far received 101 donations of brain tissue, of which six correspond to healthy patients and the rest with people suffering from a neurological disease.
Currently, the Dementia Unit works in several clinical trials designed to evaluate a therapeutic vaccine and Alzheimer biomarkers.
