Ecologists in Action region of Murcia, has approached the Ministry of Presidency and presented a set of arguments on which opposes the granting of the Integrated Environmental Authorization to the proposed plant expansion in Chemical Derivatives Township Sewer
For this environmental organization, modifications and extensions of the project are substantial and storing a large amount of toxic and hazardous substances increase the risk of incidents and / or leaks that pose a severe environmental impact and risks of contamination.
The project will include a larger number of substances other than those specified in the listing that the company submitted to the Plan Chemical Emergency Sewer (PLANQUIAL), being necessary to opinion of Ecologists in Action environmental authorization prior to any alteration or reprocessing Plan according to the new situation.
Ecologists in Action raises the need for containment, management and security far greater than those raised in the project.
For the environmental organization, is concerned about the large number and variety of toxic and / or potentially dangerous, to which are added to storage facilities and corrosive solvents.
To cite some examples, among the many substances that cites the project, the plant store: thionyl chloride (SOCl2), chemical reagent used in chlorination reactions, Dimethylformamide, organic compound, (CH3) 2-N-CHO, used as solvent for chemical reactions and methylene chloride also known as dichloromethane, methyl chloride and methyl dichloride, chemical compound used as a solvent in organic chemistry.
In the area there are several schools and several homes near the town.
Add to that the plant absorbs another company adjacent to chemical storage (NOVOCHEM 2000, SL).
It so happens that in 2010, the plant was the subject of a record of the General Directorate of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control ordered to close a combustion boiler for excessive emission of dioxins and furans following the Service Report Environmental Monitoring and Inspection of 19 June 2010, which identified the exceedance of emission limits for dioxins and furans and stressed that excessive exposure to these pollutants can cause very significant impacts on the environment and human health because of its high toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation.
For Ecologists in Action, minimizing the potential emissions of air pollutants and also takes into account the social impacts that may have sunk the expansion / modification of the plant, for example, the depreciation in the price of homes built in the Nearby, the depreciation of the soil in the immediate vicinity of the plant and decreasing the perception of quality of life and wellbeing in the neighborhood.
