The restoration works of the Puente de las Pilas de Alcantarilla will start after the summer, thanks to the investment of more than 110,000 euros included by the regional government in the budgets of 2017 and that will be realized through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Environment.
Councilor Javier Celdrán today visited Alcantarilla together with the mayor of the town, Joaquín Buendía, and the president of the Junta de Hacendados, Diego Frutos, to know the state of this construction, which is considered Well Cataloged for its cultural relevance.
Celdrán explained that "from the regional government and the Ministry, we work constantly through different actions and collaborations in the recovery of the historical heritage of the Region, turned in many cases, thanks to its richness and quality, in a pole of attraction For the cultural tourism that complements the wide offer of the municipalities ".
Therefore, he added, "budgets for 2017 included different items to contribute to the restoration and recovery of assets of different municipalities that are part of our history and identity, as well as to continue working on the study of some of the most relevant deposits" .
In the case of Alcantarilla, items were included for the Puente de las Pilas and for the Aqueduct of the Arches, declared to be of Cultural Interest (BIC).
The Puente de las Pilas is located in the main ditch of Berreras (Alquibla in medieval times).
It is a construction that stands out for its cultural relevance due to its typology, historical significance and long chronology.
The investment made by Culture "will guarantee its maintenance, restoring this emblematic construction of Alcantarilla for its enjoyment by citizens of the municipality and the entire Region," said the councilor, who explained that the Ministry "will work in collaboration with the City Council and the Board of Ranchers, who will also perform different actions for the recovery of the bridge and its surroundings.
The actions included in this joint project involving the Community, the Consistory and the Board of Landowners, and which involves a total budget close to 200,000 euros, are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.
The works on the bridge will consist of the consolidation of the structure, with the replacement of the parapets, and the improvement of access.
Likewise, "the interventions that will be carried out after the summer are oriented, besides the conservation of the own construction, to the improvement of its natural and urban environment, which will contribute to the protection of the species of the zone making it compatible with the Enjoy the citizens, "said Celdrán.
The construction
The Puente de las Pilas, with a half-point arch, is the object of numerous repairs and maintenance works. In its present configuration, it has a curve in plan with its major side in favor of the current of the irrigation channel and it rests on two large axes.
Old photographs show remnants of a stone and brick parapet crowning the structure, which can now be recognized starting.
Puente de las Pilas is located to the east of the present urban center of the locality, next to the primitive site of the Muslim farm of Qantarat Askaba and to the old population of Alcantarilla, destroyed and transferred by reason of the successive floods.
Likewise, the Aqueduct of the Arches, whose maintenance works also begin after the summer, is considered one of the earliest vestiges of the irrigation system in the Region.
The architectural ensemble, with 25 arches, was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and belongs to the major irrigation ditch of Barreras or Alquibla.
A second body corresponds to an enlargement (13th century) made to collect water from other subsidiary ditches.
The third and last body corresponds to the Daba ditch.
