Family will develop a program for access to decent housing and against the shanty towns in Alcantarilla (30/05/2016)

The Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Thomas, along with the mayor of Sewell, Joaquín Buendía, and the director of Caritas, José Saura, today visited the centers of social programs 'The Campico' and 'San José Obrero' .

More than 3,500 people, 90 percent of Roma, are benefiting from actions to develop processes that drive host coverage of basic needs and access to resources and accompanying personal development processes.

After the visit, Violante Thomas explained that the shantytowns is one of the problems more acute by this group in the city, so Alcantarilla, along with Murcia and Mazarrón, will be one of the three municipalities where programs against substandard housing to be developed the Joint Commission of the ministries of Family and Equal Opportunities and Development, to coordinate and promote all social policies on housing, in order to promote social inclusion of families through the use of access to decent housing.

The Department of Family and Equal Opportunities developed at the regional level the 'Comprehensive National Strategy for 2015-2020 homeless' and, according to the minister Thomas Violante, "the region already has advanced how the intervention should be to provide assistance to these people . One of the goals that the strategy arises is to establish mediation services and support to prevent loss of housing. for this, we have the experience of antidesahucios agreement signed last year, the Community, through the Ministry of Public Works, Public works and Planning, and a group of financial institutions, Banco Mare Nostrum, CAM and Cajamar Sabadell- to prevent the execution of uprisings ".

"Among the commitments for the future is to continue working to expand the number of empty homes to which they can give use to eradicate substandard housing and collaborate with municipalities, in order to detect situations of extreme poverty, and get a real map of substandard housing situation in the region.

Social support programs

The counselor explained that "families participating in the programs of Caritas suffer in their daily numerous shortcomings and problems marked by poverty, unemployment, dependence on social assistance. Among the minor highlights the difficulty attending school, the curricular lag, early dropout from school or the lack of alternatives and spaces for a healthy leisure, which are fundamental social promotion programs and support of Caritas in this municipality. "

The overall objective of the House-Workshop the Campico is to promote and contribute to personal, family and social development of the population living in this place, accompanying them to acquire some optimal living conditions, access to social rights and greater inclusion in their midst.

On the other hand, San Jose Obrero is a neighborhood that was built for the eradication of shantytowns in 1958. Gradually it has become a depressed area, mostly inhabited by families of low socio-economic level, they find serious difficulties to carry out adequate personal and social development, and a decent life.

In it, Caritas is developing a workshop recovery, repair and recycling second-hand clothes, to improve the employability and chances of access to the labor market women in poverty and social exclusion.
