The AMPA of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús de Alcantarilla school joins the Kiri Urban Forest municipal project with the planting of 600 trees (21/04/2020)

| The students have taken care of the trees at home and municipal employees have planted them in a municipal space located next to the IES Alcantara | The Association of Mothers and Parents of Students (AMPA) of the Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Jesús de Alcantarilla has joined the initiative of the Kiri Urban Forest City Council to plant trees in the municipality. The City Council of Alcantarilla donated 600 trees of the Kiri variety last December and the AMPA of the school distributed them among the students as a Christmas gift.

The students have taken care of the trees and watched them grow until three months later they were delivered to the school so that they could be planted on March 13, which due to the Covid-19 crisis, had to be suspended.

The size that the trees have already reached has forced the City Council to plant some of these specimens last week and will continue planting this week in a municipal area located on Valenzuela Street, behind the IES Alcántara.

The next academic year the students will participate in a coexistence to see the evolution of their trees. The Councilor for the Development of the City and Historical Heritage, Laura Sandoval, highlighted that "this initiative has allowed children to learn about climate change, sustainable development and care for the environment.

In addition, during the time that the students have had the tree in house have been able to observe the care it needs and the growth process of a Kiri ". Urban forest The Kiri Urban Forest project consists of planting more than 10,000 trees to convert Alcantarilla into an urban forest.

The City Council project contemplates the planting of trees, both indigenous and other species, in municipal urban plots in order to expand the green mass of the municipality, cushion the effects of climate change, purify the air and improve the relationship of citizens with the nature.

The objective is that in a short period of time, the municipality will go from the current 14,300 trees to more than 25,000 specimens.

Entities, associations, companies and educational centers such as Hidrogea, Actua, Lisanplast, Fampama, the Junta de Hermandades y Pasionarias Cofradías de Alcantarilla, the Eusebio Martínez Special Education School, have already joined this initiative.the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús school and the Association of Friends of the Museo de la Huerta. The tree species Paulownia tormentosa, known as "tree of life", "empress tree" or "Kiri" has the fastest growth on the planet, and in eight years reaches the size of a 40-year-old oak.

This species is ideal for urban plantations because its deep roots save soil from erosion, and it is resistant to fire and cold, in addition, it absorbs ten times more carbon dioxide than any other tree and can be used as a biomass generator.
