The archaeological works focus on the study of the Aqueduct, which has two phases, the one that is currently in use, dating from the mid-16th century, and pillars that would be part of the original Aqueduct of 1457
The City of Alcantarilla resumed in early August the works of the remodeling project around the Museum of the Garden, the Ferris Wheel and the Aqueduct, which have been temporarily paralyzed due to the appearance of buildings, structures, ceramics and period coins Roman during excavation work.
The mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaquín Buendía, visited the works today accompanied by the Councilor for City Development and Historical Heritage, Juan Antonio Mata, and explained that "after the findings, the initial project had to be modified since the archaeological zone is considered to be great cultural interest, so it was proposed to change the location of the playgrounds and the amphitheater contemplated by the project to move them away from the archaeological site. "
Archaeological excavations have been carried out since the beginning of the year in support of the project to adapt the Aqueduct and improve the environment of the Huerta Museum.
Until now, the work has focused on the study of the Aqueduct itself, which has at least two distinct phases: the one currently in use, which both documents and archaeological evidence tend to date in the mid-16th century, specifically around 1549 , and a series of evidences of one or more previous phases, in the form of remains of pillars and foundation shoes to which the current aqueduct is added, part of which would correspond to the original aqueduct of 1457. Currently working in the vicinity of the wheel, where the oldest cloths of the aqueduct are conserved, to see its union in foundation with the aqueduct of the XVI century in use.
The project includes the remodeling of 25,000 square meters in the Museum environment where an outdoor amphitheater will be built with the arches of the Aqueduct as a backdrop, for performing arts, music and other activities, with capacity for about 500 people, a playground Children's integration on an area of about 1,000 square meters, a Skate Plaza, for skateboard lovers, and a 'Street Workout' area for calisthenics workouts.
In addition, it includes a dog park of more than 1,200 square meters with 'agility' elements and a kiosk-bar with terrace.
Likewise, LED lighting will be installed throughout the park, new urban furniture and tree planting will be increased.
The 27 arches of the Aqueduct have already been excavated, 26 that were already known and one more that was discovered after the excavations.
Buendía stressed that "these works will offer a tourist and heritage attraction for our municipality, at the same time that they will be an incomparable setting for the Museum of the Garden, the Ferris Wheel and the Aqueduct."
The remodeling works began earlier this year and are funded through the Biennial Plan for Cooperation of Works and Services of the Autonomous Community, with an investment exceeding 650,000 euros, of which 500,000 are provided by the regional government and the rest for the City Hall.
