The work has detected a "flight of customers" to Murcia on weekends, due to the lack of an annual offer of cultural and leisure activities, which is causing some shops to close on Saturday afternoons and for the hospitality industry to be Profitable close the afternoon and Sunday night
The PSOE and UGT have carried out a fieldwork to analyze the level of occupation and activity of commercial premises and catering establishments in Alcantarilla.
In total, 295 stores distributed along eight streets have been visited, as well as six-seat establishments and three boulevards.
From the data gathered, it can be seen that 26% of these premises (77) are closed, for rent, for sale, even in a situation of abandonment, between the main street, the main artery of the town, and in adjoining streets such as Los Garcías , Los Carros, Cuartel, Ruiz Carrillo, Pedro Manuel Toledo, Ángel Galindo and Menorca.
The level of occupation that has been detected in the streets visited during the execution of this work amounts to 74% - 211 open premises.
For PSOE and UGT this is "an acceptable rate", but the political and trade union show "concern" for three recurring problems that prevent a new activity to 26% of premises that are closed, whose closures, in some cases has been perpetuated for many years.
"The first problem that any entrepreneur finds is that the City does not have its own support to encourage the opening of businesses and to help cushion the initial investment," said PSOE and UGT.
The second problem "is the price of rents", as indicated by PSOE and UGT after having consulted prices in specialized portals, such as milanuncios or idealista.
For a low of 40 square meters in the Camino de la Piedra, 375 euros per month are requested;
in the Calle Mayor it can cost 2,000 euros per month to lease 170 square meters and in the avenue Martínez Campos a local of 60 square meters costs 600 euros.
"The cost of the lease may seem, a priori, adjusted to the market, but in practice it is excessive if we take into account that on weekends the influx of the public is not assured".
And it is that the third problem that PSOE and UGT have detected in their field work, is a "disbanded of clients" to Murcia the weekends.
"One of the causes of this phenomenon is the absence of an offer of cultural and leisure activities scheduled for the whole year and segmented for all sectors of the population: children, adolescents, adults and the elderly."
The fall of clientele is causing that only in the surroundings of the Consistory half a dozen of low commercial ones - in rent or in sale - they do not find investors interested in setting up a business or in resuming the activity that previously had those premises in sectors related with the fashion, aesthetics or restoration.
"This flight of customers to the capital of Segura", according to PSOE and UGT, is cutting the hours of commercial activity, as some businesses away from the urban center choose to close on Saturday afternoon.
In the case of the hotel trade, some owners of bars in Adolfo Suárez square and Martínez Campos Avenue prefer to lower the blinds in the afternoon and on Sunday nights because the benefits of the day do not cover opening costs.
Another problem that is generating this phenomenon is the relocation of franchises, as an example of a clinic in the dental sector and a firm specializing in ink cartridges that have moved their headquarters from the Calle Mayor de Alcantarilla to Murcia.
In addition, a confectionery belonging to a supply chain idealist the transfer of the establishment for 1,500 euros per month.
"The lack of cultural incentives and leisure is being noticed in the unemployment data of the hospitality industry," according to the political education and the union.
The statistics of the Employment and Training Service of the Region (SEF) reveal that the number of unemployed in the hospitality sector of Sewer has grown consecutively during the last five months: October (364), November (385), December (388) unemployed), January (400) and February (404).
Levels of occupation by zones
The highest levels of commercial occupation, between 80% and 100%, can be detected from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the direction of Plaza de Campoamor.
From Campoamor to the Príncipe Avenue, to the limit of Alcantarilla with the Murcia hamlet of Sangonera la Seca, the occupation of commercial premises begins to decrease gradually until it reaches 40%.
In this area there are no activity establishments that previously hosted a gym, a bar, a hairdresser, a real estate agent, a jeweler ...
PSOE and UGT warn that "one of the most worrying points" is the stretch from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to the Plaza de España, where occupation drops to 10%.
In fact, in the aforementioned square, although there are post offices that guarantee the transfer of people from Monday to Saturday, there are five closed premises, including a tobacconist.
"Some of the shop windows of these establishments are full of paint and dirt, which reduces their attractiveness to potential entrepreneurs or investors," laments both the political party and the union.
Eight closures in Adolfo Suárez Square
The field work has also detected that in the Adolfo Suárez square and its surroundings 8 of 21 stores are without activity: a real estate office, two restaurants, two bars, a pubs, a confectionery and an ice cream shop.
"It is striking that in the center of Sewer, after the investment of 12 million euros in the remodeling of the square and the construction of the parking lot of Entrevías, these establishments continue with the sign of 'rented' or 'is transferred'", PSOE and UGT point.
As for the other places analyzed, those of Las Palomas, Campoamor and Las Dos Palmeras are at full capacity, while Plaza Bohemia is at 50%.
State of the boulevards
In the case of the three boulevards distributed along the Calle Mayor, only the one located at number 113, is one hundred percent occupied.
"The nearest boulevard to the area of Entrevías (number 110) is the one that is most central and has the worst occupancy data (56%), with five empty places of nine, while the boulevard located near the Unalba building , has three empty of nine commercial establishments (66%) ", according to the data collected.
Improvement proposals
With the results of this fieldwork, the socialist candidate for mayor of Alcantarilla, Francisco Saavedra, is holding meetings individually with merchants and restaurateurs of the city "with the aim of hearing first hand their problems and find solutions to the Customer fall on weekends. "
From the meetings held, according to Saavedra, "the need to create a cultural strategic plan with an annual periodicity, which offers activities for all publics and includes campaigns to promote trade and the Sewer industry in surrounding towns where There are potential clients: Las Torres de Cotillas, Sangonera la Verde and La Seca, Puebla de Soto, Javalí Nuevo or La Ñora ".
The candidate also wants to promote in the next term of office the opening of spaces and specific leisure facilities for teenagers and an advisory council for the commerce and catering of Sewer.
"This council will meet regularly with representatives of the commercial and hospitality sector to design work strategies and plan activities with the City Council because, historically, Sewer has been a city of services and that has to be reinvigorated," concludes Saavedra.
