On this occasion, 114 local governments have been awarded for the first time, and 80 have renewed their commitment to childhood, with a total of 274 local governments being part of this network.
The award ceremony was held at the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of the city of Oviedo and, on behalf of our City Council, the Councilor for Education, and First Deputy Mayor, Juan Manuel Gómez, who has received hands of the president of the Committee of UNICEF of Asturias the diploma that accredits to Sewer like Friendly City of the Childhood.
The Town Hall of Sewer began, in 2017, its project to be part of the network of Child Friendly Cities that, year after year, is increasing by the recognition of the policies made by local entities in favor of children and adolescence.
Last October we received with enthusiasm the news that UNICEF Spain had decided to recognize our town as a Child Friendly City, highlighting its commitment and activities related to the participation of young people in municipal decision-making, such as the children's meeting that took place in March 2017 as well as the elaboration of the I Plan of Infancy and Adolescence of our municipality that gathers the contributions made by the citizens in the Consultation and Debate Phase (Participative Workshops) of the Process of Citizen Participation, which have been very useful for a correct interpretation of the demands of the residents of the city.
In addition, in April of this year, the Memory of Actions for Children and Adolescents 2016/2017, the Analysis and Diagnosis of the population and the Plan for Children and Adolescents 2018/2021 were sent to Unicef.
In Child Friendly Cities, children have access to quality social services, live in a clean and safe environment, can enjoy their family life of play and leisure, are respected and treated fairly in their neighborhoods, and their needs are taken into account in the laws, policies and decisions that affect them.
The City of Alcantarilla thanks UNICEF Spain for this recognition of its commitment to place the youngest at the center of its political agenda assuming they are citizens of the present with the same rights as adults and is fully aware of the need to promote participation of children and young people in making decisions that affect them and their future.
Undoubtedly the children and young people of a city are their most precious asset since they will be the ones that form their adult society of the future.
The validity of the appointment as Child Friendly City is for the period 2018 - 2022, year for which the City of Sewer will work with the objective of renewing this important concession for our municipality.
