[The roof of the Local Development Agency will be a tall garden with 192 square meters of vegetation (14/12/2020)

| Alcantarilla is the first municipality in the Murcia Region to implement this pilot project, in collaboration with the Ministry of Development and Infrastructures | The roof of the Local Development Agency will become a large garden in height, with 192 square meters covered with vegetation, which will help reduce pollution in the city, neutralize carbon emissions, to regulate the temperature and to promote the biodiversity of the area. Alcantarilla is the first municipality in the Region of Murcia where this pilot project of the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure will be installed to integrate green areas in administrative buildings and improve the environmental conditions of the city, which is part of the Sustainable Architecture and Construction Strategy of the Autonomous Community. The Mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaqu n Buend a, and the Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Jos Ram n D ez de Revenga, signed today the protocol to start the project and "depending on the results we obtain on improving air quality, building energy efficiency and reducing pollution, we will consider implementing it in other buildings in Sewer ". Green roofs also provide direct benefits for the building, such as improved thermal and acoustic insulation, temperature regulation and energy savings. With this initiative "we also expand the green areas of the municipality, renaturalize urban spaces and improve water management, since part of this vegetation needs very little irrigation and can be maintained with rainwater", the mayor specified. Two types of vegetation will be planted on the roof of the Local Development Agency, on the one hand succulent and sudum, which hardly need watering, and on the other hand herbaceous and small native shrubs, such as albard n, white rockrose, thyme, rosemary, purple evergreen and sea fennel, which require a minimal irrigation system, integrated into the project. The project is part of the actions launched by the Alcantarilla City Council to improve energy efficiency in municipal facilities, as set out in the Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES), approved by the Plenary on April 24, 2019. In addition, since 2017 the City Council has been part of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the European strategy to combat climate change to reduce greenhouse gases by 40 percent before 2030.
