Environmental education and recovery of the riparian forest in the Contraparada with the Samaniego Sewer Center Teaching Center (23/12/2018)

During this week, a hundred ESO 1 students from CES Samaniego (Alcantarilla) participated in the plantation upstream of the Contraparada (Murcia) dam of a riverside forest organized by ANSE in the context of an agreement with EMUASA

Last Wednesday, December 19, 50 students from CES Samaniego planted typical riverbank species in a curve of the river before the Contraparada dam, where only one day before they had cleared their cane.

The students learned the importance of the riparian forest and verified in situ the dimensions of the cane that interrupts the natural flow of the channel and even makes it impossible to see it.

This action is added to those previously made in this section, in some cases, it has been necessary to cover with a black plastic to solarize the area covered with cane.

The 100 specimens of poplar (Populus alba), ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), willow (Salix sp.) And tamarisk (Tamarix sp.) Are added to the more than 300 specimens already planted on the left bank.

With the supervision of the Water Commission of the CHS, ANSE and Aguas de Murcia intend to recover, from the environmental point of view, this area invaded by cane (Arundo donax), an exotic species with a strong invasive nature, difficult to eradicate and considered one of the 100 most dangerous invasive exotic species in the world.

The actions are being developed from where the taking of the Aljufía begins to the highway of Andalusia.

And on December 20, the activity was completed with games in nature, all framed in the awareness of the importance of the riparian forest and the associated fauna.

The recovery actions of the riparian forest in the Contraparada are developed within the framework of the collaboration agreement established between EMUASA and ANSE for the integration of biodiversity in the activity of the company.

Since 2017, € 80,000 has been invested in various measures for the improvement and promotion of biodiversity, such as sugarcane control, the recovery of riparian vegetation, the monitoring of the fauna of the Contraparada or the adaptation of bat refuges.
